Ski Magazine 2011 rated Snowshoe Mountain as one of the top 20 ski resorts in the east. Here is what they had to say. Yes there's skiing in West Virginia. And don't you snooty Northerners dare laugh till you've considered a couple things about Snowshoe Mountain Resort. 1)There are mountains in these parts--maybe not as rugged as your Whites or your Adirondacks, but Snowshoe picked a good one, with some moderate challenges. 2) It snows in the winter( 231 inches last year,180 on average), and sometimes, when the lake-effect cranks up, it snows a lot. 3)This is an Intrawest resort, and the village is as lively as you'd expect it to be. 4) You never saw people who know how to enjoy themselves more than the skiers at Snowshoe and if you're going to be all stuck-up about it, you're going to miss a good time. so, all things being relative, Snowshoe, the ski capital of Appalachia, pops back into the Top 20. The chief strength of this upside-down resort (village on the summit) remains its proximity to geographically challenged D.C.-area skiers, who are happy to make the five-hour drive.
